The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II is the international celebration throughout 2012 marking the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the thrones of seven countries upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952. She is today queen regnant of 16 sovereign states, 12 of which were British colonies or Dominions at the start of her reign.
Queen Victoria in 1897 is the only other monarch in the histories of the United Kingdom,[1] Canada, Australia and a few other Commonwealth realms to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee. Following the tradition of jubilees past, a Diamond Jubilee medal is being awarded in various countries and holidays and events will be held throughout the Commonwealth. Plans were discussed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2011.

As a highly celebrated saint in both the Western and Eastern Christian churches, a large number of Patronages of Saint George exist throughout the world, and his iconography can be found on the flags and coats of arms of a number of cities and countries

St George's Day is also celebrated with parades in those countries of which he is the patron saint. Also, St George is the patron saint of Scouting. On St George's day (or the closest Sunday), Scouts in some countries choose to take part in a parade and some kind of church service in which they renew their Scout Promise. In the United States, both the Episcopal Church and the Catholic Church (in both the Roman Rite and in Eastern Rites) offer a Saint George Award to adults; the Baden-Powell Scouts' Association holds St. George's Scout as their highest youth award; Orthodox Churches offer a Saint George Award to Cub Scouts.

Flag of England.svgThe national flag of England, known as St. George's Cross, has been England's national flag since the 13th century. Originally the flag was used by the maritime state the Republic of Genoa. The English monarch paid a tribute to the Doge of Genoa from 1190 onwards, so that English ships could fly the flag as a means of protection when entering the Mediterranean. A red cross acted as a symbol for many Crusaders in the 12th and 13th centuries. It became associated with Saint George, along with countries and cities, which claimed him as their patron saint and used his cross as a banner. Since 1606 the St George's Cross has formed part of the design of the Union Flag, a Pan-British flag designed by King James I.

Teddy Bear Party Cookies

At your build the bear party, serve these yummy homemade teddy bear cookies.

Ingredients:
~~~~~~~~
Ingredients for your delicious homemade cookies
(makes 18 cookies)
1 fresh egg
6 ounces of soft butter
8 ounces of sugar
2 teaspoons of vanilla essence
26 ounces plain flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/4 teaspoon of salt
2 ounces of melted unsweetend cooking chocolate
Bear Shaped Cookie Instructions:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Directions for your chocolate teddy bears recipe:
In a large mixing bowl, carefully mix the egg, sugar, vanilla and butter, until completely combined, with no unmixed ingredients sticking to the sides. Add the baking powder, salt and flour to the mixture and stir slowly, making an evenly mixed dough.
Split the dough into two, placing half into a medium sized bowl. Add the melted chocolate to this half, and stir thoroughly.
Each teddy bear cookie will have a body made from a 1-inch dough ball, 3/4-inch ball for the head, 4 1/2-inch balls for the arms and legs, and two smaller balls for the ears.
Place the teddy bear body onto an ungreased cookie tray, flattening slightly, shape the head, arms and legs as you like, and attach them to the body by overlapping the dough slightly. Do the same with the ears to the head.
You can have fun with different positions, and combinations of colours.
Add small balls for the eyes and mouth, and even buttons on the teddy bear's tummy!
A good tip is to use a fork to make the bear claw shapes on the paws.
Pre-heat your oven to 375°F (190°C)
(Tip - you can do this when you start mixing!)
Bake the cookies for 7 to 8 minutes, or until the cookies are set.
Leave the cookies to stand on the tray for 1 minute before transferring them to a cooling rack.
Eat when they are completely cool.
(But I'm sure no one will mind if you have a taste when they are still hot, but watch out you don't burn your tongue!)
